Our mission is to provide affordable, secure, financially and environmentally sustainable housing for people on low incomes, primarily in the South and East of Melbourne who are committed to cooperative democracy and engagement.

Services

The services provided by SouthEast define its reality as a housing co-op. SouthEast commits to ensuring its long term capacity to continuous improvement of all services.

Members

Members own and control their co-op and this is the essential characteristic of SouthEast. The board represents the members best through its obligation to be representative, accountable and transparent.

SouthEast is committed to the values of cooperation, voluntary membership, democratic control, autonomy & independence, co-op education and cooperation between co-ops.

NATIONALSHELTERNational Shelter, Community Sector Bank and SGS Economics and Planning have partnered to launch Australia's first Rental Affordabability Index.

The Index reveals the depth and extremity of housing stress faced by renters in the current market. Both low income and moderate income households suffer poverty due to high rental costs.

Housing stress occurs when households pay 30% or more on rent. Low income households are having to pay around 65% of income on rent to access a tenancy. This means that rents are extremely unaffordable. 

This first issue of the Index releals evidence that low income households are in a dire situation, single income households are worst off and rent costs are now locking low and moderate income households out of inner cities.

members2The SouthEast Housing Co-operative Ltd Annual General Meeting was held on the 16 November 2015 and a record number of 61 members were in attendance.   There were 16 apologies from members unable to attend the meeting.  A tribute was paid to the former General Manager Ian McLaren. There were two guest speakers - Professor Terry Burke and John McInerney.  Andrea Lee was re-elected Chairperson of the co-operative. The Annual Report was presented to members with Chairperson Andrea Lee, Secretary Greg Nolan, Business and Finance Committee Convenor Tracey Hall and the Joint Managers Joy Haines and David Griffiths speaking on various aspects of the Report.

RTASecurityV2The Victorian Government has released an Issues Paper on Security of Tenure and is inviting submiisions until 21 December 2015. The Issues Paper includes a series of questions on security of tenure.

The Victorian Government is reviewing Victoria's rental laws to ensure  "a modern and dynamic rental market, in which tenants are safe and secure, and which will meet the current and future needs and expectations of tenants and landlords." The Issues Paper Security of Tenure is the first of a series of issues paper "which will encompass a broad range of issues relating to the operations..." of the Residential Tenancies Act 1997.

What are the obstacles (including any provisions in the Act) to tenants and landlords entering long leases?

SouthEastAnnualReport2015V2The SouthEast Housing Co-operative Ltd Annual Report 2014-2015 is the most comprehensive published by the co-operative since its formation - demonstrating the  board's commitment to increased accountability and transparency to members. New features in the Annual Report include sections on the co-operative's service areas - Compliance Services, Maintenance Services, Membership Services and Tenancy Services. There is also a tribute to the former General Manager Ian McLaren who died in July this year.

This year's Annual Report also includes three photo galleries - Co-operative Community, Co-operative Democracy and Co-operative Homes.
