Co-op City was established in 1966 and is a New York City housing co-operative located in the Northeast Bronx with 15,372 residential units in 35 high-rise buildings and 7 townhouse clusters. Co-op City has approximately 50,000 residents - 55% black, 25% hispanic and 20% white. RiverBay Corporation manages the co-operative with a 16 member board - 15 are residents of Co-op City.
There are over 1000 employees and the co-operative includes its own private police force and three shopping centres each withy its own supermarket, dry cleaner, restaurants, shops and community rooms used for cultural events and private parties. . There is a 25-acre educational park which includes three elementary schools, two middle schools, a high school and a planetarium. There are also two weekly newspapers - Co-op City Times and City news.
