Our mission is to provide affordable, secure, financially and environmentally sustainable housing for people on low incomes, primarily in the South and East of Melbourne who are committed to cooperative democracy and engagement.

Services

The services provided by SouthEast define its reality as a housing co-op. SouthEast commits to ensuring its long term capacity to continuous improvement of all services.

Members

Members own and control their co-op and this is the essential characteristic of SouthEast. The board represents the members best through its obligation to be representative, accountable and transparent.

Co-operation

SouthEast is committed to the values of cooperation, voluntary membership, democratic control, autonomy & independence, co-op education and cooperation between co-ops.

phoenixcoverThe Phoenix - The SouthEast Housing Co-operative Ltd is a 64 page booklet about the history of a housing co-operative based in Dandenong, Victoria, Australia, written by David Griffiths and published by the co-operative.

The main sections of the booklet are Co-operative Housing, The Early Years, Co-operation Threats and Opportunities, Co-operation Strengths and Weaknesses and Co-operative Adaption and Change.

Co-operative Housing briefly explores the nature and origins of co-operative housing throughout the world and, in particular, Australia. The Early Years examines the specific origins of rental housing co-operatives in Victoria and the four co-operatives that eventually became the SouthEast Housing Co-operative Ltd - the Frankston, Moorabbin, Oakleigh and Ringwood-Croydon rental Housing co-operatives.

Co-operations Threats and Opportunities explores the relationship between the rental housing co-operatives and various Governments between 1985 - 2010. Co-operation Strengths and Weaknesses considers the importance of member participation and the experience of co-operation between housing co-operatives - the Joint Housing Collective, the Phoenix Management Co-operative Ltd the United Housing Coalition Inc and the Co-operative Housing Sub-Committee of the Community Housing Federation of Victoria (CHFV).

Co-operative Adaptation and Change outlines the process that led to the formation of the SouthEast Housing Co-operative Ltd and the ongoing capacity of the co-operative to adapt and change - demonstrating a continuous ability and willingness for rebirth and renewal which is a defining characteristic of co-operative longevity.

The booklet also includes a list of milestone dates between 1074-2010, interviews with foundation members, a list of housing co-operatives registered with the Housing Registrar, a contribution by a member on the importance of the co-operative and the International Co-operative Alliance's Statement on the Co-operative Identity.
